LEAD / FOLLOW

JACK & JILL

Jack n Jill is a lead/follow division designed to test social dance skills in West Coast Swing. Partners are randomly assigned at the start of the prelims and are judged individually. In finals, new partners are matched and judged as a partnership.

At the Australian Open:

  • ALL preliminary rounds are held as an all-skate;
  • ALL Finals will feature spotlight performances and an all-skate.

We are using the rules outlined on the WSDC website.

Levels: Newcomer, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced/Allstar, Invitational.

LEAD / FOLLOW

STRICTLY SWING

Strictly Swing is a lead/follow division designed to highlight social dance skills with a pre-arranged partner. Couples are judged as a partnership.

Preliminary rounds are held as an all-skate; Finals will feature spotlight performances and an all-skate.

  • You may NOT dance in a division lower than your Jack & Jill, but you may dance in a higher one.
  • This is a Swing category and dance content must be 80% that style.

Levels: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced/AllStar.

CHOREOGRAPHED

PRO-AM ROUTINES

  • Dancers of ANY level qualify to compete as Ams in this division provided they are a lower level than their Pro.
  • YOU CAN compete with a travelling pro / champion level competitor (the “am” is primarily being judged).
  • Maximum of 2 routines per Pro.
  • This is a Swing category and dance content must be 80% that style. There are no Lifts or Aerials allowed.
  • Drops are allowed.
  • Costumes are required.
  • Music Time Limitations: No less than 2 minutes and no more than 3 minutes.

PRO AM STRICTLY

The spirit of the Pro-Am division is to showcase the student’s true abilities, with their regular instructor.

  • Dancers of ANY level qualify to compete as Ams in this divisionprovided they are a lower level than their Pro (novice level instructors may compete with novice level students).
  • YOU CAN compete with a travelling pro / champion level competitor (ONLY the “am” is primarily being judged).
  • Maximum of 3 students per Pro.
  • Strictly swing rules apply to this division.

CHOREOGRAPHED

CLASSIC DIVISION

Classic is an open-level division in which dancers perform a choreographed routine. This division features choreography, music selection and costumes.

  • This is a Swing category and dance content must be 80% that style (any swing dance style is allowed). There are no Lifts or Aerials allowed. Drops are allowed.Costumes are required.
  • You are only allowed up to 5 drops
  • The definition of “swing content” and “drop” are at the head judge’s discretion – no discussion will be entered into.
  • Breakaways must not exceed 8 beats.
  • Champion & Pro Level competitors ARE allowed to compete.
  • Music Time Limitations: No less than 2 minutes and no more than 3 minutes.

CHOREOGRAPHED

TEAMS DIVISION

The Teams division will feature a minimum of 3 couples in a choreographed routine. This is an open-level division featuring choreography, music selection and costumes.

  • This is a Swing category and dance content must be 80% that style (any swing dance style is allowed).
  • Lifts, aerials and drops ARE allowed.
  • Costumes are required.
  • Music Time Limitations: No less than 2 minutes and no more than 4 minutes.

STATE OF ORIGIN

DANCE BATTLE

The State of Origin is the division where sugar pushes don’t count! Bring your best tricks, moves & entertainment in this winner-takes-all, crowd-pleaser division.

  • Lifts, aerials and drops ARE allowed & encouraged.
  • The event directors will select Team Captains from the 5 regions with the most event registrations (as at the end of April), and the Team Captains will decide their State of Origin teams.
  • The event directors will not engage in debates about the validity of the team captains, or the selections within the teams.
